The light in this painting was tricky to work out as I wanted to. The Galloways are almost completely in shadow, but the building on the left side is bathed in sunlight, bouncing an enormous amount of reflected light into the scene. This is one of the main reasons I wanted to paint this view. The gaze of the subject animal is what first sparked my imagination but the light couldn't be ignored. I love the ambiance of it.
