The Artwork of Brian Kliewer

By Request - A Drawing

This is an old drawing I did for practice.  It's based on a figure from the 1945 Norman Rockwell painting, "The War Hero."  That is a very "busy" painting, though very good.  I just wanted to try to capture the expression of the little boy.  Sorry about the poor quality of the scan, and as you can see, the drawing itself hasn't fared too well over the years, either.  Jana Botkin, one of my readers, suggested I post a drawing...so here it is.

I don't draw these days like I should.  I used to draw all the time.  Mostly I just rough in a sketch on my canvas and get into the painting.  But I've been thinking about getting back into drawing more.  Maybe I will and post some of them here or on my other blog.

Brian, thank you! This is wonderful, and it is almost 30 years old. I doubt I'd ever want anyone to see my work from that long ago, but this is beautiful. I love the way it just sort of fades away at the bottom. You did catch the expression, that sense of awe.

Why do you think you "should" draw more?

Haha...I should have hidden the year, I guess. Making me feel old. :) But thanks for your kind words.

Well, I do "draw" on a regular basis...on canvas. But those sketches get hidden by the paint. I think every artist should draw more. I mean, it's so easy to want to get to the texture and color of the paint right away. We lose that first spark, or we can. And it is our "language." And like cursive writing, I think it's a skill that we might be losing over all.

Another reason... Have you ever heard this "Chinese proverb"? "Tell me and I'll forget. Show me and I'll remember. Involve me and I'll understand." This is pretty much how I view it. This is what drawing can do. You can see something as it really is when you draw it.

You do very nice drawings, by the way.

Great proverb, and well-thought-out answer to my question. I think you could develop it into a blog post or two.

Interesting that you think it might be going the way of cursive writing. . . maybe because there is too much tracing, too much projecting, too many gadgets that negate the need to draw.

Thank you for your compliment on my drawings. I love to draw. The only reason I began oil painting is because of an article I read by Jack White 6 years ago. It does sell more easily but Boy-Howdy, it is hard! Probably because I am still trying to draw with a paintbrush. . . and wishing someone would teach me how not to.

Well, I like your paintings too.

Yes, I probably could get a post out of this. But for now, I decided to write another post about "blogging. " Check it out. :)

Thank you, Larry. Sure. That sounds like fun.

Yes, blogging can work. It's not dead yet. :)
